The cottage
Cedar, stone, and sunsets
Step inside our waterfront cottage rental in Muskoka, Ontario and you're wrapped in warm cedar, anchored by the cottage's centrepiece: a heritage fireplace built from Georgian Bay stone. The cottage is built directly on the granite shoreline, perched on the wind-smoothed pink-and-grey rock of the Canadian Shield right where it meets the water. Inside, the open-concept kitchen, dining and living space is made for long breakfasts and board-game nights, with two comfortable bedrooms and an updated washroom just down the hall.
Days here revolve around the water. Dive off the dock, float on the lilypad, or wade in from the sandy beach, a gentle entry that little swimmers love. Back on shore there's an outdoor shower, a sand area made for castles and campfires, and a shaded lawn with a horseshoe pit, picnic table, and a shed full of lawn games.
Then comes the main event. The deck faces southwest over Georgian Bay Islands National Park, so every clear evening delivers the kind of sunset that inspired the Group of Seven. Long after the colours fade, the show carries on overhead: with no city lights for miles, the sky fills with stars, and on a clear night you can pick out the Big Dipper and the glow of the Milky Way over the bay.
You're anchored in the heart of the 30,000 Islands, the world's largest freshwater archipelago. The park's hiking trails, lookouts and quiet coves are a short paddle from your dock.

Getting here
Part of the adventure: arriving by water
The Hideaway sits on Little Beausoleil Island, a 15-minute boat ride from the marinas of Honey Harbour (an easy drive of less than two hours north of downtown Toronto). No boat? No problem. Most guests book a water taxi: park at the marina, hop aboard, and step onto the cottage dock minutes later. As one guest put it: "Water taxi was also seamless."
You'll park and set off from the marinas of Honey Harbour, an easy drive of less than two hours north of downtown Toronto. From there the cottage is a short water-taxi ride out into the bay; the pin marks the cottage itself, so you can see exactly where you're headed.

Explore the area
There's a whole bay to explore
One week is barely enough to scratch the surface. Right across the water, Georgian Bay Islands National Park offers paddling, hiking, beaches and quiet coves. Open the guide for boating ideas, day trips, local food and practical tips.

Right on the water
Georgian Bay Islands National Park sits just across the water on Beausoleil Island, an easy paddle or short boat ride away. Tie up at Cedar Spring, rent a bike, and follow the trails through Canadian Shield granite to quiet swimming beaches, bay lookouts, and the loop around Fairy Lake, a protected boat-free lake in the island's interior. Drop a line for smallmouth bass, pike and perch (an Ontario fishing licence is required), or book a guided trip with a local charter like All Angles Fishing out of Honey Harbour. Watch for the area's rare turtles, herons and the shy, protected massasauga, Ontario's only rattlesnake, which keeps to itself and simply asks for a wide berth. A small park admission fee applies.
If you bring your own boat
The bay really opens up under your own power. Spend a day gunkholing the anchorages and swimming coves around Beausoleil and the nearby islands: Cognashene, Go Home Bay and Twelve Mile Bay are classic runs, or nose up to Wreck Island to walk its wind-sculpted rock formations. Cross to the long sand beaches of Giant's Tomb Island, run a little farther to Beckwith Island (a favourite for bigger boats), or point north into The Massasauga Provincial Park, a boat-access wilderness of granite and pine. For a true Georgian Bay bucket-list day, cruise south and lock through at Port Severn onto the Trent-Severn Waterway, then ride your boat overland on the Big Chute Marine Railway, the only lock of its kind in North America. One tip: Georgian Bay's pink granite runs right under the surface, so keep good charts (the Navionics app is a local favourite) and a careful eye on the water. No boat of your own? Georgian Bay Charters runs guided tours of these same waters and rents Sea-Doos.
Day trips ashore
When you're up for a day on the mainland, Midland is about a 45-minute drive and packs in both essentials and history: full grocery stores and restaurants, the reconstructed 1600s Jesuit mission at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the boardwalks and observation tower of the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, and the Huronia Museum. Nearby Penetanguishene brings an early-1800s British naval base to life at Discovery Harbour, and Six Mile Lake Provincial Park makes for an easy beach day. Closer in, about 15 minutes from the mainland landing, Oak Bay Golf Club is one of Muskoka's best, with Christies Mill Resort & Spa nearby for a slower, restful day. Prefer to let someone else captain? 30,000 Islands cruises sail from Midland and Penetanguishene through the summer.
Where to eat & treats
A few local favourites are a short hop away: Fin City Fish & Chips and the Maple Canadian Pub for a casual meal. For ice cream, Picnic Island is the closest scoop, or track down IceBreaker, a floating ice-cream boat that's a little farther out but worth it for the novelty.
Stocking up
The Honey Harbour General Store near the marinas covers the basics, from milk and bread to a deli and butcher counter, with an LCBO close by on Honey Harbour Road. For a full grocery run, the Midland supermarkets are about 45 minutes out, so many guests stock up on the way in.
Questions & answers
Frequently asked questions
We don't have a boat. How do we get there?
Easily! Most guests book a water taxi from Honey Harbour: about 15 minutes to the cottage dock, with pickup arranged for your departure day. See the Getting Here section for licensed operators. Book your taxi ahead, especially for summer weekends.
Where do we park our car?
The marinas in Honey Harbour offer paid parking. Honey Harbour Boat Club has parking on site and runs a water taxi, and Georgian Bay Islands Water Taxi pairs with Joe's Parking. Park, load your gear onto the taxi, and you're off.
Is there drinking water at the cottage?
Please bring your own drinking water. The cottage has full indoor plumbing (toilet, shower, kitchen sink), but it's drawn from the lake: great for washing, not for drinking.
Are pets welcome?
Yes, dogs are part of the family here. We welcome one dog per stay at no extra charge, just check with us when you book.
Is there wifi and cell service?
Yes: high-speed Starlink internet covers the cottage, fast enough for streaming on the Smart TV or a video call if you must. (We won't judge either way.)
Is it good for young kids?
Very. The sandy beach entry is gentle and gradual, there's a dedicated sand play area, a shed full of lawn games, and a horseshoe pit. Maximum 5 guests.
Is the cottage a good fit for our group?
It's made for one family or a couple, up to 5 guests. We don't host parties or events, and quiet hours are 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. If that sounds like your kind of week, you'll fit right in.
Can we have a campfire?
Yes: there's an outdoor campfire area by the water, perfect for marshmallows at dusk (subject to municipal fire bans in dry spells), and firewood is provided. The stone fireplace indoors is a heritage showpiece and isn't used for fires.
How does check-in work?
Self check-in with a lockbox, any time between 3 and 8 p.m. Checkout is 11 a.m. You'll get simple directions and everything you need to know before you arrive.
When should we book?
Early! July and August weeks go first. Many guests rebook for the following summer before they've even left. If your dates look taken, ask anyway: we can sometimes shift things around.
The personal touch
Meet your host
Hi, I'm Matt. The Hideaway isn't run by a management company, and it isn't one unit in a portfolio: it's run by me, with my family pitching in. I'm the one who answers your messages (usually within the hour), and together we prep the cottage before you arrive, handle every upgrade and repair, and make sure your week goes the way a cottage week should.
Hospitality is my background, not a side hustle: I managed a resort right here in Muskoka, and before that I worked at Walt Disney World's five-star resorts (the Grand Floridian, the Contemporary, and the BoardWalk). I do my best to bring that standard of care to two bedrooms on Georgian Bay.
Most of all, this is our family's favourite place. We swim off this dock, play these lawn games, and chase these sunsets too. When you stay, you'll find the cottage kept the way we keep it for the people we love.
